Ottawa gardens fail underground first: a skim of black earth over builder's clay grows weeds brilliantly and perennials poorly. Every bed we build starts with stripping the turf, loosening the base, and bringing in real garden soil at depth – then edging that holds a line, planting, and mulch. It is the difference between a garden and an arrangement of struggling plants.
We design planting the practical way: what direction does the bed face, what will it look like in February, and how much weeding do you honestly want to do? From there we layer structure (shrubs and grasses), workhorse perennials, and seasonal colour, planted at spacings that fill in by year two or three. Add a tree where the yard needs height, and the composition is complete.
Not every garden needs a rebuild. Most tired Ottawa beds respond to one hard refresh – clear, divide, replant, re-edge, mulch – and a couple of maintenance visits a season after that. We will tell you on site which your beds need.
