Big lawns on sensible budgets
Same prep as sod, fraction of the price
Hydroseeding covers ground fast: a slurry of seed, mulch, fertilizer, and tackifier sprayed over graded topsoil. On large areas it costs a fraction of sod – the trade is patience, because you grow the lawn instead of unrolling it. The part that does not change is the prep: grading and real topsoil depth decide the result either way.
Grading and topsoil depth first – the mulch is green but the soil does the work.

How hydroseeding works
The slurry does four jobs at once: seed for the lawn, wood-fibre mulch to hold moisture and shade the seedlings, starter fertilizer to feed them, and tackifier to glue the whole layer to the soil – which is why it holds on slopes where broadcast seed washes into the low corner with the first rain. Sprayed over properly graded topsoil, it germinates in days and fills in over weeks.
Where it beats sod – and where it does not
On a large new-build lot, an acreage, or a slope, hydroseeding delivers the same end result as sod for a fraction of the money, and we will happily quote both so you see the gap. On a small front yard where you want finished-today perfection, sod is worth its premium. That honest line is easy for us to draw because we sell both sides of it.
Set up to succeed
Hydroseeding fails two ways: thin soil and missed watering. We control the first with the same prep discipline as our sod work – grade corrected, topsoil at depth. The second is yours, and a sprinkler system or even a cheap timer makes it nearly automatic; ask and we will set the schedule for you. From there, regular care turns the new lawn thick by next season.
Hydroseeding in Ottawa – FAQs
How much does hydroseeding cost in Ottawa?
Meaningfully less than sod on the same yard – typically a third to half the installed cost once soil prep is included, with the advantage growing on large areas. We quote hydroseed and sod side by side on request so you can compare real numbers for your property.
Hydroseeding or sod – which should I choose?
Sod buys an instant, weed-free lawn and wins on small, high-visibility yards and slopes you walk on now. Hydroseeding wins on budget and on big areas, and the deeper-rooting seedlings establish well – but you babysit water for three weeks and mow a slightly scruffy teenager of a lawn for a season. We do both, so the recommendation is honest.
How fast does a hydroseeded lawn come in?
Sprouts in about 5-7 days, first mow around 3-4 weeks, and a lawn that looks established by the end of its first full season. Spring and early fall applications establish best in Ottawa.
What is the watering commitment?
The mulch layer must stay damp for the first two weeks – typically light watering two to three times a day, then tapering. Skip the watering and you skip the lawn; the plan we leave makes it hard to get wrong.
